Our patron, he acted as a midfield. He is the highest scorer in the history of the Maracanã stadium, with 333 goals in 435 matches. He was chosen as the third best Brazilian footballer of the 20th century, and the third best among all the World, according to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS). He is one of the four Brazilians to appear in the FIFA Hall of Fame (the others are Pele, Garrincha and Didi).
He played as a midfield player - technically, he was a right-hander, that quickly excelled in the many goals he scored.
In the 80's, he led the Rome squad to conquer the scudetto, fact that had not occurred since 1942; also he commanded the team and earned the nickname "King of Rome"
(and in Italy itself, of "Divine" or "the eighth king of Rome").
He is always recognized for his elegant style. He had great heel skills and he was a complete player: he scored goals from foul, head and out of the area frequently. He gave perfect assists for his team-mates to score many goals. The Guardian has chosen Socrates as one of the six most intelligent sportsmen in history (he is the only footballer on the list).
Player of classic style, he s known by the spirit of leadership, and was called the "Boss of the Ball". At Atlético Mineiro, he was also known as the "Captain of Peace". In the Genovese squad he stood out in the title of the European Cup Winners' Cup, in the Champions League runners-up, in the three-time Cup of Italy and in the unprecedented achievement of the Italian League.
As a player, Júnior was ambidextrous and versatile, a good scorer and a great distributor of plays, regardless of position. The ease of playing well with both legs allowed him to act as left-back, right-hander, and midfielder. He was a very technical player with a rare ability, had great vision of the game, accuracy in passing, and was a great kicker (having even scored some Olympic goals).
Better known in Brazil than abroad, he played 52 matches for the Brazilian National Team between 1979 and 1986. His nickname was "The Cannon" or "Bomba" since he was considered a player with a very powerful left foot kick. He took part of the historical thrashing of Atletico over Colombia by 6 to 1, being one of the heroes of the massacre. This presentation give him a place among the stars of the 1982 Brazilian National Team.
The player whose preparation is solitary.
And that who usually is the most reminded by his/hers mistakes.
The goalkeeper is the last man.
The hero. The giant.
The bravest.
The Savior.
For us the goalkeeper will always be number 1.
